Nanton Naa subjects attacked; Police have confirmed the arrest of one person

Police in the Northern Region has confirmed the arrest of one person in connection with the attacks on two subjects of Nanton Naa Muhammadu Baba Bawa at Sandu in the Nanton District yesterday.

The suspect, one Shani Ibrahim was arrested and detained since yesterday to assist in further investigations. Yesterday at about 12 mid-day, two emissaries of the embattled Nanton Naa who was appointed by the King of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II were attacked at Sandu and severely assaulted.

The two sustained severe cutlass wounds after the unidentified mob attacked them. Confirming the incident, Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mohammed Yussif Tanko told journalists in Tamale today that Amadu Suleimana and Alhassan Andani were en-route to Batang-yili when they were attacked. He said after severely beating them, the two were taken to Nanton.

DSP Yussif Tanko said a team of police personnel was dispatched to Nanton to rescue the two emissaries of N-Yeb Nanton Naa Bawa. However, on their way, DSP Yussif Tanko said police had another report that the two were taken to the Savelugu District Police Headquarters where they were redirected to escort the victims to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department in Tamale where they were issued a medical form and taken to the hospital. He said the victims were treated and discharged at the TTH and investigations are underway.

Nanton has become the center of the latest chieftaincy dispute in Dagbon after the people of the area rejected the Yaa Naa’s appointed Paramount Chief. Zoosali Lana Haruna Tia, the paramount chief of the Zoosali Traditional Area declared himself as the Nanton Naa, claiming he is the people’s favorite. Since then, the Yaa Naa’s Nanton Naa has been ruling the area from his base at Sagnarigu.
