Kpatinga: Tamale Magistrate Court has remanded five persons

The Paramount Chief of the Kpatinga Traditional Area, Kpating-lan Fuseini Ziblim has made a passionate appeal to public sector workers to return to the area, following an outbreak of violence last week.

The Kpatinga Chief especially appealed to teachers in the area to come back and reopen the schools to pave the way for academic activities to resume.

The Kpatinga palace came under a gun assault from the regent’s faction last Friday, leading to the death of at least one person with a dozen more injured. At least 10 houses were also burnt. The violence also saw the burning of foodstuff belonging to rivals of both factions.

Tudu Lahabali Kpana’s Mumuni Yirifa Yunus who was in Kpatinga yesterday reported that the once busy and buzzing town, the second largest settlement under the Gushegu Municipality has been deserted and what is left of it can best be described as a Ghost Town.

He said the violence has forced women, children and the aged out of the community. He also reported that schools in the area have been closed down while the only health facility there has also been closed down.

Yunus also reported that the very busy market square has also been taken over by the armed military and police officers when I arrived in Kpatinga. Naa Bapri Kpatinglana tells Yunus the life is coming back to normalcy, hence the need for the teachers to return.

The Kpatinglana also appealed to residents who have fled the area to return because state security has taken over, assuring that there will be no threat to lives and properties again.

Meanwhile, a Tamale Magistrate Court has remanded into prison custody, the five persons arrested by Police in connection with the chieftaincy dispute in Kpatinga.

Hashmin Mumanjadi 32, Alidu Alhassan 27, Fatau Kpanalana 35, Mohammadu Dokurugu 55 and Iddrisu Azondoo 57 were arrested by the Police following a gun assault on the Kpatinga palace which left at least one person dead. They have been charged with Rioting with Weapons Conspiracy, Causing Damage, Causing Harm and Possession of Fire Arm in a Prohibited area.

Northern Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Kwabena Otuo Acheampong has been addressing the media.
