Being a female musician in a male-controlled industry

Story; Rahamatu-Lahi Zakaria

Making it big in any field as female, you need to work ten times harder than your male counterparts and this notion plays big time in the music industry.

To talk about the issues female musicians faced in the industry, Sanatu Zambang had in their Studios, Diva one and Amie, two female artists who are dominating the northern region music scene. Their stories were similar when talking about their experiences in the industry.

Diva1 and Amie also shared their concerns about the music industry and their plans to break down boundaries in 2020.

Sexual favor is one of the things they all experienced in the industry.

According to these two artists, people who called themselves industry players will approach them, not with the intention to help them upscale their talent but just to ask for sex in return for favors. They want them to trade sex for favors to grow in the industry.

Same on inappropriate behavior, some management team comes to approach them and everything said has sexual undertone in them.

Some people who they go to for help will always remind them that they have refused to give them the fruit to taste and they have come to request a favor from them.

Getting a team to manage them is difficult apart from these sexual harassment. much concentration is given to males’ artists. some of the things the two artists mentioned in the terms and conditions of these contracts.

According to them, when you do not read these contracts well it might hunt you later in your career. You might think for now it is good but later it will not work out.

The management team wants to take advantage of the naivety of female artists to exploit them.

Another challenge these female artists are facing is airtime. Their songs do not get that much playtime on air. Once again, their male’s counterpart is given special treatment by these presenters because most of our airwaves are controlled by men.

Some of them do not see the talents of these female artists. They always rate males higher than females. But they were quick to add that they do send their music to DJs and presenters but still do not get the airplay they want. Diva one in her presentation acknowledges Dj Parara for his support for being the first person to play her music on air.
