The Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT Ghana) has called the bluff of the Chairman of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Council who is threatening to recruit new teachers if the striking teachers do not call off their strike.

The CCT dared the GES to do its worse, saying that the threats will not scare them to call off the one-week-old strike. Three teacher Unions- the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) declared a strike on Thursday, December 5 after suspecting that their arrears have been verified and approved for payment by the Controller and Accountant General’s internal audit unit, yet the monies have not been released.

The strike action has left pupils and students from Basic and Second Cycle schools who were preparing to write their End of Term and End of Semester Examinations stranded.

The Chairman of the GES Council, Michael Nsowah while speaking on the issue on Accra based Adom FM threatened that should the teachers continue with their industrial action, the state will be forced to employ new teachers. He said inasmuch as the government will not dispute the rights of the teachers to protest, it will also look on as such actions affect the academic work of students.

However speaking on the Super Morning Show with Mumuni Yirifa Yunus today, the Northern Regional Secretary of the CCT, Nuhu Jingli said no such thing can be done. According to him, the three teacher unions have a combined population of over 300 thousand, hence it is not possible to sack them all.

He said the teacher unions will not comply with the directive by the National Labour Commission on the striking teachers to return to the classroom, insisting that their industrial action is legal, contrary to the NLC’s position that it is illegal.
