The National Population Council has inaugurated an eight-member Northern Regional Implementation Committee to oversee the successful conduct of next year’s Population and Housing Census.

Among other things, the committee is to help publicize the impending exercise and recommend people for recruitment for the exercise.

The eight-member committee includes the Paramount Chief of Tolon, Tolon Naa Abubakari Sulemana who will be playing an advisory role and the Northern Regional Director of the NCCE, Alhaji Abdul Razak Saani as the chairman of the committee.

The rest are Alhaji Issahaku Seidu Iddi, George Agbanyo, Ahmed Hussein, Alhassan Issahaku, Edward Azure and Dr. John Betson Eleazar.

Speaking at the inauguration of the committee, the Director of Administration at the National Population Council, Kwadwo Asante charged the Committee to oversee their role effectively, ahead of the 2020 population and housing census in the region.

He said the committee is expected to help Ghana Statistical Service to mobilize vehicles and motorbikes for the over five thousand people expected to be recruited for the exercise.

He said the 2020 Population and Housing Census will begin in March 2020 and will run for five weeks.

In a speech read on his behalf, the Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed said

Government is determined to conduct the sixth post-independence population census next year. Underscoring the importance of the population census, the Northern Regional Coordinating Director Alhaji Alhassan Issahaku who read the minster’s speech on his behalf said the 2020 census will offer the country the opportunity of revising its electoral areas and constituencies. He said the data that will be provided by the census can also use to track the progress of poverty reduction in the country.
