Kpalbe: 59year old farmer is North East Gonja District Best Farmer

59year-old rice farmer, Alhaji Alhassan Abochi has been adjudged the 2019 Best Farmer of the North East Gonja District of the Savannah Region.

He becomes the first District Farmer of the Year for the district which was carved from the Salaga Municipality earlier this year. He received a brand-new tricycle, popularly known as motorking and other farm implements.

The North East District Best farmer has hundreds of acres of rice, maize, groundnut and soya beans farms and also rears animals. Speaking after receiving his award, Alhaji Alhassan Abochi urged farmers to adopt best practices as advised by Agric extension officers. He appealed to the government to provide farmers in the district with tractors for hiring. He said the provision of the tractors will help improve Agric productivity in the area.

Other winners included Hamza Abukari Sadiq and Issahaku Alhassan, District Best PWD Farmers, Zakaria Wumbei, District Best Legume Farmer, Azara Imoro, District Best Female Innovative Farmer and Sulemana Lansah, District Best Male Innovative Farmer.

The rest are Nathaniel MB, District Best Extension Agent, Awal Kobilaje, District Best Fisheries Farmer and Ibrahim Iddrisu, District Best Livestock Farmer. They received a bicycle each and other farm implements including NAPSAC Spray Bags, Cutlasses and wellington boots.

Haruna Mariam was adjudged District third-best farmer whiles Yakubu Abdul Rahman was adjudged the District 2nd Best Farmer. The runners-up both received a motorbike each and other farm implements. The District Director of Agriculture, Alhassan Mohammed Shiraz emphasized the need for farmers to consider agriculture as a business by making their activities competitive and do the right thing.

The District Chief Executive for the North East Gonja District, Abdullah Alhassan Iddi underscored the significant role the NPP led government has played in the agriculture sector. He said this year alone, government-provided over four thousand bags of NPK fertilizers and 670 bags of Uria fertilizers among others.
