The District Chief Executive of the North East Gonja District of the Savannah Region is calling on chiefs and other traditional authorities in the area to help stop the felling down of trees in the area.

According to Abdullah Alhassan Iddi, it is not well that illegal chain saw operators always mention chiefs as those who gave them permission, each time they are arrested.

Mr. Alhassan Iddi is worried that the cutting down of the trees for wood has caused a lot of damage to the environment.

The North East Gonja District is notorious for the felling of trees for wood and charcoal. Tens of illegal chain saw operators have been arrested over the years while several hundred others manage to evade the eyes of the state security agencies.

Speaking in an interview with Tudu Lahabali Kpana’s Mumuni Yirifa Yunus on Friday, December 6th, 2019, Mr. Alhassan Iddi said the assembly plans on embarking on a tree planting exercise in the district next year and called for support for the exercise.
