Former President John Dramani Mahama has extended his support in the fight against the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) disease by providing Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) in the Northern Region.
The PPEs included;
- 1,000 pairs of surgical gloves
- 100 full gowns and
- 100 gumboots
The Northern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Ibrahim Mobila handed over the items on behalf of the former President and party’s flagbearer to authorities of the hospital on Thursday, April 9, 2020.
He said the donation was to help protect health workers of the facility in the discharge of their duties in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alhaji Mobila said former President Mahama was unable to visit and present the items personally due to the imposition of restrictions on movement of people in force in the Greater Accra region.
He said the gesture formed part of an NDC-led nationwide distribution of PPEs to selected health facilities across the country.
In brief remarks, a member of the NDC COVID-19 Technical Team, Dr Prosper Akambong, a former Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital said the gesture was in response to the lack of PPEs for health workers at the facility.
He expressed the hope that the gesture would go a long to boost their morale and confidence in the discharge of their duties.
The Acting CEO of the hospital, Dr Kareem Mumuni, who received the items on behalf of the hospital expressed his gratitude to the former President for the support to equip staff of the hospital to discharge their duties efficiently without any fear of the viral disease.
He also thanked the regional executives of the party led by the chairman for their words of encouragement to the health workers in these difficult times to deliver.
Dr Mumuni also appealed for more support in the area of PPEs for the hospital to augment the support of the government.
The party executives in the region on behalf of the flagbearer, Mr Mahama also donated hand sanitizers to the caretakers at the Public Cemetery in Tamale, the Butchers Association, Tipper Truck Drivers Association, tricycle operators, market women at the Tamale Central Market and other identifiable groups.
So far Ghana has recorded 313 cases with the Northern Region recording 10 cases.
