Sanatu Zambang ended January with an art exhibition dubbed the SCCA Tamale Challenge at the studios. the exhibition saw a great number of young talented artists in capital coming to showcase their craft and also network as well.

This exhibition was to diversify what art is in the capital and not just limit it to just music and movies like what people think it is.

This was the first of its kind in the studios and they hope to continue giving the opportunity to young budding talents in the capital to be heard. The theme for the challenge was “Memories of the past and future”.

According to Salma, apart from studying visual art in senior high school, she has not had any professional training in art and she will be very grateful to get such help from them. Most of the time, she learns from YouTube and Instagram.

His ceramic pots and paintings show a fascinating blend of Northern-Ghanaian and Universal influences. Of what is visible and what his hidden. Of nature and culture. He dares to innovate and experiment, for example with parts of a fridge that one finds as waste in nature.

Rashid Asigri is more than a very talented creative artist. He is also the designer and builder of the tools that support his creative process and output.

In my conversations with him around his work, I learned to know him as an intuitive and passionate human being.

He is proud of the Northern-Ghanaian culture and loves to bring what he does to the level of perfection. The machine he uses now was the result of many “trials and errors”.

He persisted until he realized the perfect machine for the type of ceramic pots/artworks he wanted to create. Observing him during the creation process and seeing the pots with my own eyes, he definitely succeeded in that mission.

Salma says that, after meeting Ibrahim Mahama, the founder of Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art, she feels like she can do something in arts afterward and she is inspired by the work of the artist. She also acknowledges how amazing it will be for her to get training from SCCA as an artist.

‘’This challenge means a lot to me because this is the first time, I have participated in an art exhibition and people are getting to know that I can draw aside been a social activist and a volunteer.

It is very important to everyone It is going to open something new, especially the artists. I hope to learn new things at the end of the challenge.’’ She added.

Salma also took the opportunity to appeal to the general public to appreciate artists and the work that they are doing.

‘’I pray and hope that after this day, people will be open to art and at least appreciate what artists do. Artists are pouring a lot of emotions from the inside.’’

‘’We will be grateful if people appreciate what we are doing and if in case of patronizing, they will patronize it very well.’’
