The protestors who were clad in red and black outfits matched through the principal streets of Tamale holding placards most of which expressed the group’s rejection of the compilation of the new register.
The demonstration dubbed “Tikusagi demo” was staged by the Inter-Party Resistance Against a New Voters’ Register (IPRNA). Political Parties who participated in the demonstration included the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the People’s National Convention (PNC), the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the All People’s Congress (APC), the United Front Party (UFP) and the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).
Addressing the protesters after the match, General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Aseidu Nketiahsaid the EC can enhance the old register without compiling a new register.
He said the NDC is finding it hard to understand why the thumbprint biometric the EC is planning to change has a performance rate of 99.4 percent compared to the new system which performance rate he claimed was 85percent.
Also addressing the protesters, Founder and Leader of the APC, Dr. Hassan Ayariga said the reasons given by the EC to compile the new register is not reasonable and unacceptable, noting that they will not allow it to happen.
