Most of the districts in the northern region do have libraries or they have uncompleted structures. some of these structures are being occupied by grass, animals, or other institution due to the apathy attached to reading in this part of the world.

For this reason, Youth Empowerment for Life (YEFL) is embarking on a journey to call on people in authority to take a second look at redeveloping our libraries to improve the literacy rate in the region.

At a forum organized by YEFL on the 20th of December, 2019 at the northern regional library, the northern regional youth network petitioned the regional minster through the MCE for Savelugu, Hajia Ayishetu to work on revamping libraries in the region. In the petition, the group wanted the regional minister to work in providing one district one library to help people in all areas of the region to have access to library facilities.

During the forum, YEFL screened a documentary they had done to showcase to participants the worrying state of district libraries in the region. In this production, we saw an uncompleted structure that had been abandoned and now housing grass and animals. Some were near completion while others, the stuff had abandoned it because they were not been paid. Some of the facilities were been occupied by the security service.

But in the Savelugu Municipality, the story was different. They had a fully functioning library stocked with books. In her speech, the MCE for Savelugu promised to work on getting the ICT aspect of the library working to ensure that, they meet the standard of a modern-day Library. But the district that fell behind was Kunbugu. The structure that was started to be used as the library has been left to rot and it is now occupied by animals and grass.

The director for Northern regional Library, Mr. Aaron K told the public that, the mandate of the regional library to the districts under its jurisdiction. He pledges his support to all districts and said they are reading to come and support the district with training and also personnel to revamp the district level library should they call on them.
