President Akufo Addo criticizes the Nigerian government for closing down its borders with the Republic of Benin.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has for the first time criticized the Nigerian government for closing down its borders with the Republic of Benin, saying that the giant African nation has created a big problem.

A visibly unhappy President said that it is worrying that, over three hundred Ghanaian trucks are stuck at the Nigerian side of the Nigeria- Benin border and that, perishable goods are being destroyed as a result.

The Government of Nigeria in August closed down its western border with the Benin Republic in what it said was moves to end the smuggling of foreign rice into the country. It said, its borders will remain closed until affected countries begin to respect Nigerian policies on importation.

Ghana, Benin, and Togo remain the hardest-hit countries by the closure with Ghanaian beverage manufacturer, Kasapreko losing over 2 million dollars alone. Over 300 Ghanaian trucks have been stuck at the border with most Ghanaian traders still stuck in Nigeria. The Government of Ghana has been holding talks with the Nigerian authorities as it aims at convincing the Lagos to reopen its borders.

But speaking at an Encounter with the Media today, President Akufo Addo believes being hostile towards other sister African countries is not the way forward for Africa.
