Ghana Venskab and YEFL Art of Change 2024 Workshop

Tamale, August 2024—“Art of Change 2024” series. Features in-depth discussions with celebrated Ghanaian artist, Bright Ackwerh, Sandro Masai’s, and Chief Abukari Yilikpandana, both of whom play pivotal roles in the intersection of art and social change in Ghana.

The series, titled “Ghana Venskab and YEFLGH Art of Change 2024 delves into how art can be a powerful tool for education and advocacy, particularly in addressing social and environmental issues. Hosted by the insightful team at Sanatu Zambang, the podcast explores how art can influence policy and drive meaningful change, reflecting the core objectives of the “Art of Change 2024” initiative.

Alhasan Abdul Ganiyu, shares his experiences and insights into the importance of art education in shaping young minds and fostering critical thinking. He also discusses YEFL art for change role in helping young artists to produce their books and also turned Arabic calligraphy into arts with the help of an artist in Demark. He encouraged the artist community to use their skills to help advocate for climate change and environmental issues.

Najaat Fuseini, a filmmaker and participant in the Art for Change workshop opened up about her experience in the program, she says the most important thing about the workshop is the networking opportunities because it helps creatives to meet new artists and collaborate and expose them to the world.

Another artist, Mavis Tumawu a musician also noted that she is expecting to have fun and learn more to present her musical artwork.

Mr. Bright Ackwerh encouraged young artists to always practice what they learn to improve upon their work. He emphasized on the need for young artists to use the internet and social media. Work on their self-confidence.

Bright Ackwerh acknowledged the efforts of Ibrahim Mahama for his great contribution to the arts industry in the northern part of Ghana. He concluded by encouraging young artists to collaborate with other artists to work effectively.

The Art for Change workshop was jointly linked with the YELF Go Adapt Pre Cop Conference, the 3day event was met with representatives from partner organizations and youth groups from and around the Northern region. The Go Adapt project is in partnership with the Empowerment for Life program, implemented by Changing Lives in Innovated Partnerships, Ghana Development Communities Association, YEFL Ghana, and Ghana Venskab with funding from CISU.

The conference was on the theme; Climate Action for Sustainable Development in Northern Ghana; Building Resilient and Empowered Communities.

Participants witnessed multiple sessions happening simultaneously on day 2 of the conference, the sessions included climate finance, climate adaptation, and climate and youth.

Kumbungu, Tolon, Savelugu, and Nanton youth centers participated in Pre Cop pitching competition, aimed at innovative ideas to improve environmentally friendly and eco agriculture. Among the innovative ideas that echoed throughout the pitch were; organic pesticides, fonio cultivation, and tree nursing technology.

The winners (Savelugu and Nanton) took a cash prize of five thousand ghana cedis and runner ups (Kumbungu and Tolon) took home three thousand ghana cedis.
