Soronko Academy partners with Fead-Ghana to train 20 girls in ICT

About 20 girls from the Sagnarigu Municipal and the Tamale Metropolis have graduated in
various ICT trainings in Tamale. The girls, who went through a six-week intensive ICT training were trained in digital marketing, that is how to use the internet to market products, how to use canva to create graphic design as well as using the internet to improve their leadership skills.

The event was organized by the Female Empowerment and Advocacy for Development (Fead-
Ghana) in partnership with Soronko Academy. Speaking at the event, the Director for Soronko Academy, Madam Regina Honu said the initiative was part of her organization’s agenda in bridging the gender gap in technology and connecting women and girls to a dignified and connecting worlds.

“We were invited to Fead-Ghana story summit some time ago, and we were overwhelmed to see
how the organization was able to mobilize about 300 girls from SHSs in the Northern region. I
remember during my presentation I asked the girls if they knew about software development and
coding and they said no” .

Madam Honu said one of the challenges that hindered women from venturing into ICT was
mindset, stating that most of the communities they visit, people tend to think they are introducing
these girls and women to `male dominated areas.


“Before, it was difficult for women to go into the area of ICT, but with these trainings and
sensitization, a lot of women are now interested in venturing into it” she added!
She added, that their organization is having talks with their partners to provide scholarship
opportunities for the girls after their trainings.

The program Assistant for Fead- Ghana, Madam, Imoro Rafia said the selection process was
done through online, where the beneficiaries had to fill forms and later the shortlisted ones were
selected.

She said one of the major objectives of their organization is to empower girls and women in
Northern Ghana, adding that there is a huge gap in ICT in Northern region and that the training
was geared towards bridging this gap.


“The girls have been so passionate about the training, especially with the designs, the coding and
all the other aspects. This is cohort one, and we hope to make cohort two more interesting and
educative”

One of the beneficiaries, Ms. Issahaku Rahanatu in an interview said the training has been very
beneficial to her because she has learned how to market online and how to use canva, adding that
she will venture into graphic design after the training to make money and employ other people.

Another beneficiary, Issah Zuwera Deshini said she had no idea that the internet could do all that
they had learned because before the training, the only internet related ideas she had was
Facebook, Whatsapp other social media handles.


“The training has come at the right time and it will serve as an employment avenue for me and
others”
