Dr. Wunpini’s most recent call to media houses in Ghana concerning the absolute ignoring of women in panel discussions on television and radio shows.

Dr. Wunpini took to her Facebook wall this afternoon to critique a number of upcoming television programmes with all panels being males, leaving out women.

The thematic areas to be discussed on the said shows include environment, law and politics.

Dr. Wunpini provided names of women with their respective expertise who could have been invited to deliberate on such topics. Below is a screenshot from her Facebook page

Dr. Wunpini Fatimata Mohammed, an Assistant Professor of Global Media Industries at the Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communication, USA, has questioned JoyNews’ degree of gender inclusion in their panel discussions.

A new week, a new opportunity to offer quality content.
We have started on a familiar note : a four-person panel that comprises professionals from the medical field. Unfortunately, it’s a panel which is thick with testicular fortitude. Not a vagina in sight. So let’s unpack why all-male panels are problematic, shall we?

Ghana media and their everyday all-male panelists. You’d think there are only men living in Ghana. The annoying part is that there are women experts on these topics but they won’t invite them because patriarchal media culture. #GhanaMedia Male “experts/panelists,” whenever you are invited on a panel ask who the other panelists are and if the panel is diverse. If it isn’t diverse, offer your spot for a female/diverse expert and make sure that the producers make the panel diverse.
You could suggest people you know. Do your part to help dismantle patriarchal culture in our media.

Men are completely silent on issues that affect women. Lack of adequate female representation on radio and tv panels, you’re silent. Pregnant students being stopped from writing their exams, you are silent. Landlords not wanting to rent to single women you are silent. Women complaining about an all male panel about menstruation- You found your dirty voice. We have been discussing rape for over 12 hours and we still haven’t heard “pim” from you. When you choose silence in the face of rape, you have chosen the side of the rapists. We see you

Dear GBC24, I will like to know why you have an all male panel discussing “concerns of African opposition leaders after elections: Genuine or mischief?” May I remind you that more than 50% of Africans’ population is women? #GenderEquality #NoMoreAllMalePanel

Shame on @Joy997FM. Shame on #Newsfile for hosting an all male panel, yet again.Shameless all male panels should be a thing of the past. You also denied youth representation when this #KNUST issue is generally about generational politics.

An issue primarily about young people without young people at the table. And we’re supposed to conclude that this will be a thoughtful discussion. Young folks don’t know how to sit at the table with adults and articualte their concerns? #Newsfile
