A group calling itself the Leaders of Gbane for Peace and Development has announced plans to stage 2-month-long picketing in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region to demand back a piece of land leased in 2013 to the Shaanxi Mining Ghana Ltd.
Hundreds of natives are reportedly warming up to feature in the picketing from January 10, 2020, to March 10, 2020, at Gbane, where the Chinese company operates.
Notifying the Upper East Regional Police Command yesterday of the upcoming development, members of the group said the move had become necessary because the Chinese company has failed to pay them off what is due them.
Meanwhile, the group also filed a petition to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, the Upper East Regional Minister and the President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, detailing contents of a memorandum of understanding said to have been signed between the community and the mining company and which the firm is reported to have breached.
